Japan and the United Nations
Meeting between Prime Minister ISHIBA and Mr. Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations

On September 23, commencing at 3:30 p.m. local time (On 24, 4:30 a.m JST) for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, who was visiting New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations. The overview is as follows:
- At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA expressed his gratitude to Secretary-General Guterres for his visit to Japan in August this year and expressed his pleasure at meeting with him again. In response, Secretary-General Guterres conveyed his gratitude for Japan’s cooperation.
- Prime Minister ISHIBA then, pointing out the urgent need of Security Council reform, expressed the intention to continue collaborating in terms of UN reform including the UN80 Initiative. In reply, Secretary-General Guterres expressed his appreciation for Japan’s support for the activities of the United Nations and delivered the efforts towards UN reform and the expectation for Japan.
- In addition, the two leaders concurred to cooperate on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and policies toward North Korea including the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue.
