G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Niagara
(Overview of the “Session 1: Global Peace and Security”)

On November 11, commencing at 8:52 p.m. (10:52 a.m. on the 12th, Japan time) for approximately 130 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Niagara, Canada, to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, participated in the G7 session on "Global Peace and Security" (in the form of a working dinner). The overview is as follows (the session was attended by the Foreign Ministers of the G7 and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy).
- In this session, the G7 had a candid exchange of views on regional situations and issues that have a significant impact on the peace and security of the international community, including the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific, Ukraine. They reaffirmed the importance of closely communicating and cooperating as the G7 in an increasingly severe security environment.
- Regarding the situation in the Middle East, the G7 reiterated their strong support for the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict by The Honorable Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America and confirmed the importance of all parties constructively engaging in the Plan, including humanitarian assistance. Minister Motegi expressed Japan's position to play an active and realistic role towards the realization of a two-state solution through advancing the Plan and engaging in the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza, and he further stated that Japan will engage in efforts such as dispatching personnel to support the provisional governance mechanism and providing assistance for Palestinian state-building.
- Regarding the situation in the Indo-Pacific, the G7 reaffirmed the importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific based on the rule of law and reiterated their strong opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force or coercion, including in the East China Sea, the South China Sea, and across the Taiwan Strait. Minister Motegi strongly condemned North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, for which cryptocurrency thefts and foreign currency earnings from IT workers are one of the funding sources, and emphasized the importance of the complete denuclearization of North Korea. Minister Motegi once again asked for understanding and cooperation from the other G7 members for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue.
- Regarding the situation in Ukraine, with the premise of discussing it once again with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister on the 12th, the G7 countries confirmed the importance of an immediate ceasefire and of cooperating as the G7 to achieve a just and lasting peace.
- In addition, the G7 discussed a wide range of regional situations, including the situation in Latin America and Africa, and reaffirmed the importance of coordinated responses by the G7 to various issues.
