G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Charlevoix (Overview of the Session 3 on Ukraine)

On March 13, commencing at 11:45 a.m. (0:45 a.m. on March 14, Japan Time) for approximately 70 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Charlevoix, Canada to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, participated in the G7 session on Ukraine. The overview is as follows (the session was attended by the Foreign Ministers of the G7 countries and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy).
- In this session, the G7 countries had a candid exchange of views on the situation in Ukraine three years after the start of Russia’s aggression. The G7 ministers expressed their high appreciation for the US’s efforts towards peace and pointed out the importance for the G7 to work together to have Russia act positively. The ministers reaffirmed the G7’s unwavering support for Ukraine, while pointing out the significance of security guarantee of Ukraine.
- Minister Iwaya welcomed the efforts for peace by the US and European countries, and pointed out that the way of peace in Ukraine affects not only Europe but the entire international order, including the Indo-Pacific region, and that they must not allow a situation to arise from which wrong precedents can be drawn.
- Minister Iwaya also pointed out the achievement of a framework for the lasting peace and the importance of the involvement of the United States and the united efforts of the G7 , and stated that Japan is ready tomake an affirmative contribution, and that Japan would like to contribute to improving Ukraine's resilience, which is essential for a lasting peace, by providing assistance for the recovery and reconstruction through a public-private partnership.
