On September 23, during her visit to New York to attend the UN General Assembly, Ms. Kamikawa Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting for approximately 90 minutes from 7:45 p.m. (local time). The overview of the meeting is as follows (Foreign Ministers of the G7 countries and EU High Representative attended).

  1. In the meeting, the ministers discussed the situation in the Middle East as well as in Ukraine, which are the pressing issues for the entire international community. The ministers reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine as G7 and concurred on their coordination in rapidly ending the outrageous acts repeatedly committed by Russia. They also discussed the importance of assistance for winterization, as well as recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine. The ministers affirmed the importance of coordinating with international partners to rapidly achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
    On the situation in the Middle East, showing their concerns over the situation in Lebanon and the West Bank, the ministers reaffirmed that stopping the cycle of violence and preventing a broader regional conflict is a pressing task and it is important for the G7 countries to respond in coordination. They also reaffirmed their support for the mediation efforts undertaken by the United States and others. The ministers discussed an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, the increase in humanitarian assistance, and the reinvigorated efforts in the Middle East Peace Process, and agreed to respond in coordination as the G7.
    They also exchanged their views on regional situation, including on the Indo-Pacific such as China and North Korea.

Minister Kamikawa highlighted that the security of Europe, the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific is inseparable and stated that the coordinated responses by the G7 countries are critical in addressing a wide range of issues in the international community. Minister Kamikawa also shared her concern on the cycle of violence and the severe humanitarian situation in the Middle East, and pointed out the importance of G7’s coordinated responses in solidarity. She also highlighted the importance of recovery and reconstruction from the mid-to-long term perspective, incorporating the perspective of WPS.
  3. The ministers decided that they would continue their close communication and coordination.
