On September 22, commencing at 7:50 p.m. local time (September 23 at 8:50 a.m. Japan time), for approximately 120 minutes, Foreign Minister IWAYA Takeshi, who was visiting New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, participated in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of the G7 member states and the EU High Representative.

  1. In the meeting, the ministers exchanged views on pressing challenges in the international community, including the situations in Ukraine, the Middle East, Haiti, and the Indo-Pacific. They concurred on maintaining close communication and coordination as the G7.
  2. On the situation in Ukraine, the discussion focused on prospects for peace and the G7’s response. Minister IWAYA welcomed the G7’s close coordination on the situation in Ukraine, stressing that the unity of G7 is vital to draw a concrete action from Russia. Furthermore, he emphasized Japan’s intention to continuously play its role to realize a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, including through efforts in the field of reconstruction.
  3. On the Middle East, Ministers discussed Iran’s nuclear issue as well as the Israeli-Palestinian issues
    1. On Iran, Minister IWAYA underscored Japan’s determination to urge Iran to make diplomatic efforts including full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in pursuit of a resolution of the nuclear issue through dialogue.
    2. On the issue of Israel and Palestine, Minister IWAYA reaffirmed Japan’s consistent support for a “two-state solution” and its commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. He further expressed Japan’s determination to play a realistic and proactive role in advancing toward the goal of a “two-state solution”, including through humanitarian assistance aimed at substantially improving the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, stating that the unity of G7 is important and Japan will work in close coordination with the other G7 members, including the United States, in these endeavors.
  4. The ministers also exchanged views on the situation in Haiti, as well as in the Indo-Pacific, such as China and North Korea. Minister IWAYA stressed the importance of addressing North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. He once again asked for understanding and cooperation from the other G7 members for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue and gained their support.
