Maritime Security

  1. On November 20, the Third G7 High-Level Meeting on Maritime Security was held in Rome as a follow-up to the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Lucca.
  2. Officials from G7 member states, outreach states and international organizations as well as scholars and experts attended this meeting. Director of Maritime Security Policy Division attended the meeting from Japan.
  3. An overview of the meeting is as follows:
    • (1) The agenda of the meeting was: (i) Countering illegal activities at sea, (ii) Improving safety and security of maritime environment through research and development of best standard and practices, (iii) Enhancing awareness in the maritime domain, and (iv) Safeguarding the marine environment as a prerequisite for maritime security. During each session, presentations were given by officials from G7 member states and international organizations as well as scholars and experts, followed by active discussions by the participants.
    • (2) Japan emphasized the importance of maintaining and strengthening a free and open maritime order based on the rule of law in the Indo-Pacific region and of making this region a global commons that brings stability and prosperity to any country , while introducing Japan’s efforts in the area of maritime security including anti-piracy measures in Asia and Africa and capacity building assistance to enhance Maritime Domain Awareness capabilities.
    • (3) At the end of the meeting, the representative of Canada, as the country holding the G7 presidency next year, mentioned Canada will continue to discuss global challenges with G7 member states based on the discussions about maritime security at thie meeting.
