The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers
(Statement by Foreign Minister Taro Kono)

May 29, 2018

1. On the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, the Government of Japan expresses its respect to all peacekeepers contributing to the international peace and security. During the 70 years since the first establishment of United Nations peacekeeping operations, many peacekeepers have sacrificed their lives in service. We once again offer our deep condolences for such sacrifices.

2. Since 1992, Japan has dispatched more than 12,500 personnel to 27 missions. Today, we continue to dispatch staff officers to UNMISS headquarters and also support capacity building of peacekeepers mainly from Africa.

3. The Government of Japan supports H.E. Secretary General Guterres’s reform efforts including peacekeeping reforms and will continue to contribute proactively in UN peacekeeping operations under the banner of the Proactive Contribution to Peace.
