On August 19, commencing at 10:35 a.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Mr. HAYASHI Yoshimasa, Chief Cabinet Secretary, received a courtesy call from Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, the United Nations, who is visiting Japan. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Chief Cabinet Secretary HAYASHI stated that since the enactment of the International Peace Cooperation Act, Japan has striven to play a proactive role in international peace dispatching units and personnel to UN Peacekeeping missions and stated that Japan will continue to contribute Peacekeeping missions through the dispatch of staff officers.
- In response, Mr. Lacroix expressed his appreciation for Japan's significant support and contributions to UN Peacekeeping operations. The two sides also exchanged opinions on the future of UN Peacekeeping operations in light of changing times and confirmed that they would continue the cooperation between Japan and the United Nations.
