Video message by Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs TAKAGI at the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) Conference in London

From December 28th to 29th, Mr. TAKAGI Kei, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, delivered a video message (English translation (PDF) ), at the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) Conference hosted by the Government of UK in London. This conference was organized to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the launch of PSVI as well as a follow-up of 2014 Global Summit.
- In the conference, leaders and representatives from international organizations as well as civil society from approx. 53 countries shared good practices and discussed how the international community can further strengthen its cooperation towards preventing sexual violence in conflict.
- Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takagi in his video message expressed deep concerns about the situation in Ukraine, and stated that sexual violence in conflict is a serious crime that threatens the international peace and security. He added that to prevent this violence, it is important to punish perpetrators and end the culture of impunity by strengthening the judiciary.
- He also introduced that Japan has provided support the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Prevention of Sexual Violence in Conflict (SRSG-SVC) to strengthen judiciaries to prosecute perpetrators, as well as provided medical and economic empowerment support through the work of UN Women,UNFPA and The Global Survivors Fund for Conflict-Related Sexual Violence.
- Lastly, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Takagi expressed that Japan will continue to provide support and make great efforts to prevent sexual violence in conflict alongside with the UK and other like-minded countries.
