On January 26, commencing at 8:00 a.m. for approximately 45 minutes, Mr. NAKATANI Gen, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, exchanged views online on human rights issues with Ms. Uzra Zeya, Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights of the United States.

Mr. NAKATANI expressed his respect for the U.S. determination and initiatives to protect universal values such as freedom and democracy, including the hosting of the Summit for Democracy last December, and explained Japan’s efforts in the field of human rights. Ms. Zeya demonstrated her gratitude for the Japanese government’s efforts to promote human rights and democracy in the international community and also expressed her expectation for discussions on these topics to continue.

Both sides affirmed promotion of the exchange of views among various related organizations at various levels in order to deepen future cooperation in the field of human rights between Japan and the United States.
