Japan-Lithuania Summit Meeting and Working Dinner


On June 9, commencing at 6:40 p.m. for approximately 55 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Dr. Gitanas NAUSĖDA, President of the Republic of Lithuania, who was visiting Japan. Commencing at 7:40 p.m., the two leaders also had a working dinner for approximately 90 minutes. The overview is as follows.
1. Opening Remarks
Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed President Nausėda on the occasion of his visit to Japan, stating that Japan and Lithuania share a warm and strong bond symbolized by the "Visas for Life" issued by Mr. Chiune Sugihara, and that he hopes to further deepen cooperation towards peace and stability in the regional and international community.
In response, President Nausėda stated that he hopes to further deepen collaboration to maintain and strengthen a free and open international order based on the rule of law.
2. Bilateral Relations
- The two leaders concurred on commencing discussions to explore the possibility of concluding an agreement of information security, in light of the advancement of bilateral defense cooperation into a new stage.
- Furthermore, President Nausėda expressed his gratitude for Japan’s new contributions, including support through NATO, to the "Demining Capability Coalition" initiative led by Lithuania.
- The two leaders concurred to further advance concrete cooperation across a wide range of areas, including security, economy and science and technology such as transport and shipping, renewable energy, space, and cultural exchanges, thereby further developing bilateral relations.
3. Regional Issues
- The two leaders shared the recognition that unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force is unacceptable anywhere in the world and that they would continue to cooperate to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. They also shared their serious concern over the advancement of the military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
- The two leaders concurred that they will continue to work closely together also in the context of NATO, as the security of Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific has increasingly become inseparable.
- The two leaders exchanged views on the situations in East Asia, such as their policies toward North Korea and concurred to work closely together.
