Japan-UK Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Talk

On July 17, commencing at 9:40 a.m. (local time; 4:40 p.m. JST) for approximately 15 minutes, Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Italy, held a telephone talk with the Rt Hon David LAMMY, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The overview of the talk is as follows.
- Minister Kamikawa congratulated Foreign Secretary Lammy on his appointment, and stated that the partnership between Japan and the UK, sharing values and principles, has never been closer and more robust, and conveyed her intention to closely collaborate with Secretary Lammy to further reinforce the bilateral relations and to maintain and strengthen the free and open international order based on the rule of law. Furthermore, Minister Kamikawa expressed her gratitude for the heartwarming welcome of the UK on the occasion of the visit to the United Kingdom by Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress. Secretary Lammy replied that he intended to work with Minister Kamikawa to bring Japan-UK relationship even closer.
- The two Ministers concurred that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and the IndoPacific is inseparable and affirmed their close collaboration. The two Ministers also affirmed to continue to promote cooperation such as the Global Combat Air Programme(GCAP), coordination concerning the CPTPP, and a wide range of cooperation including the area of economy.
- The two Ministers exchanged views on regional affairs including the situations in Ukraine, and in East Asia, and affirmed their collaboration. Also, the two Ministers concurred to call each other by their first names, and to arrange a meeting in person in the near future.
