Japan-Ukraine Relations

On August 13, commencing at 11:30 p.m., Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, participated in the “Virtual Leaders Meeting of the Coalition of the Willing on Ukraine”, which was hosted by the Governments of the United Kingdom, France and Germany. The key points made are as follows:

  1. Prime Minister ISHIBA renewed his respect for and expressed solidarity with all the Ukrainian people, who are battling the aggression. He stated that an early comprehensive ceasefire and to the realization of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine are our shared goals, and emphasized that we should stand united in our response to achieve them.
  2. Prime Minister ISHIBA welcomes and strongly supports efforts of U.S. President Trump to achieve these goals. He also stated that Japan strongly calls on Russia to take positive actions in the U.S.-Russia Summit Meeting in Alaska.
  3. Prime Minister ISHIBA showed a strong sense of crisis that what is happening in Ukraine could also happen in East Asia. He further noted that the advancement of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea is a matter of global security concerns, and expressed his intention to continue to work in solidarity with other countries.
  4. Prime Minister ISHIBA stated that Japan would continue its support for Ukraine in cooperation with the international community, and that Japan would particularly continue to support the recovery and reconstruction in Ukraine through a public-private partnership.
  5. At the meeting, participants exchanged views on the current situation in Ukraine and concurred on the importance of continuing to work closely toward an early comprehensive ceasefire and the realization of a just and lasting peace.
