On November 12 at 12:40 local time (at November 13 2:40 JST) for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan during his visit to Niagara, Canada to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting, held a foreign ministers’ meeting with H.E. Mr. Andrii SYBIHA, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Minister MOTEGI stated that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is an outrageous act that shakes the very foundation of the international order, and reiterated that Japan would never waver in its consistent position of standing with Ukraine.
  2. Minister MOTEGI also stated that Japan had been working on the situation in Ukraine with a strong sense of crisis that “Ukraine today may be East Asia tomorrow” and that Japan would continue to work to support Ukraine and impose sanctions against Russia in coordination with the G7 and the international community. In response, Minister Sybiha explained the Ukraine’s current situation and efforts.
  3. Furthermore, Minister MOTEGI stated that the Ukraine Mine Action Conference, that he hosted shortly after assuming his office, was successfully held and Japan would lead efforts in the field of demining. In response, Minister Sybiha expressed his gratitude for Japan's support for Ukraine and expressed his hope to continue cooperation with Japan.
  4. The two ministers concurred on working closely on strengthening bilateral relations including in the field of the security, and the future situation in Ukraine.
