Japan-U.S. Summit Meeting

On September 22, commencing at 1:05 p.m. local time (2:05 a.m. on September 23, Japan Time) for approximately 35 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, held a Japan-U.S. Summit Meeting with the Honorable Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America.
- Building on the achievements of President Trump’s visit to Japan in October last year and Prime Minister Takaichi’s visit to the U.S. in March, the two leaders concurred to further strengthen cooperation on a wide range of fields including economic security, the economy, and security, and make the Japan-U.S. Alliance even more robust.
- The two leaders confirmed that economic security cooperation to win the technological race and enhance resilience has steadily progressed in fields including AI, semi-conductors, and critical minerals and concurred to further advance cooperation.
- The two leaders reaffirmed the importance of the steady implementation of the agreement on tariffs between Japan and the United States and concurred to mutually advance their cooperation.
- The two leaders confirmed to further advance efforts to strengthen deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-U.S. Alliance, which serves as the foundation of peace and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region.
- The two leaders exchanged views on the situation in the Indo-Pacific region.
- Bearing in mind the upcoming U.S.-China Summit meeting, the two leaders exchanged views on issues related to China including economic security, and concurred that Japan and the United States will coordinate closely.
- The two leaders exchanged views on the situation surrounding North Korea and reaffirmed the need to address its nuclear and missile issues together, as well as their resolute commitment to the complete denuclearization of North Korea. Prime Minister Takaichi gained full support from President Trump on the immediate resolution of the abductions issue.
- The two leaders reaffirmed the importance of the Japan-Australia-India-U.S. (Quad) and other frameworks, and concurred that they would strongly promote the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)”.
- The two leaders also candidly exchanged views on the International Criminal Court (ICC), among other matters.
