Japan-Poland Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On August 31, commencing at 6:00 p.m. local time (1:00 a.m. on September 1, Japan time) for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who was visiting the Republic of Slovakia to attend the “V4+Japan” Foreign Minister’s Meeting, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Radosław Sikorski, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland.
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI expressed his condolences for the Polish victims of the bus accident that occurred in Hungary on August 16. Minister MOTEGI emphasized that Japan wished to realize concrete coordination and cooperation with Poland, which plays an important role in Europe, including within NATO, based on the Compreheisve Strategic Partenership concurred between two countries in April. Minister Sikorski emphasized that, based on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries, Poland wished to further strengthen Japan-Poland relations, deepen cooperation in the security field and further strengthen its cooperation with the international community, including Japan, more than ever before.
- He further stressed that, in addition to strengthening economic cooperation, Japan wished to work closely with like‑minded countries and partners, including the EU, in areas that contribute to economic security, with a view to fostering and safeguarding critical technologies. In response, Minister Sikorski expressed his agreement, and the two ministers concurred on cooperating closely to address these matters.
- The two ministers discussed the situation in Ukraine and the issue of support to Ukraine. They affirmed Poland’s importance as a business hub for Ukraine’s reconstruction and concurred that the two countries would work together to promote assistance for Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.
- Additionally, the two Ministers exchanged views on the situations in East Asia and the Indo-Pacific region. They, sharing the recognition that the security of Europe and Asia is inseparable, agreed to continue to work closely together. Furthermore, the two Ministers also agreed to continue to cooperate closely in addressing issues concerning North Korea, including the abductions issue.
