Japan-Moldova Relations
Meeting between Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru and Prime Minister Dorin Recean of the Republic of Moldova

On September 1, commencing at 3:00 p.m. for approximately 45 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Dorin Recean, Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, who is visiting Japan to attend the National Day Event of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. The overview is as follows:
- At the outset, Prime Minister ISHIBA welcomed Prime Minister Recean’s visit to Japan, and stated that Japan had consistently supported democracy and economic development of Moldova. He also expressed his respect to Moldova for receiving a large number of displaced persons arising from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
- Prime Minister ISHIBA stated that protecting Moldova’s democracy is more important than ever, and expressed Japan’s intention to spare no effort in providing the necessary cooperation to that end and to further strengthen the partnership between the two countries. Prime Minister ISHIBA also stated that Japan would continue to support Moldova’s development by providing assistance in areas such as agriculture and industrial promotion.
- In addition, Prime Minister ISHIBA stressed that Japan had consistently supported sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova.
- In response, Prime Minister Recean expressed his appreciation for support and assistance provided by Japan since Moldova gained independence, and especially since Russia launched the aggression to Ukraine to date. He explained the situation in Moldova, among other matters, the situation during the referendum and the presidential election held in 2024 as well as ahead of the parliamentary election scheduled for September 28 this year, and both sides shared the view that the election conducted in a democratic way is important for regional and international stability.
