Japan-Russia Relations

On March 19, commencing at 6:05 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a telephone talk with H. E. Mr. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, President of the Russian Federation, following the presidential election in Russia, which was held on March 18. The overview of the telephone talk is as follows.

1. Prime Minister Abe congratulated President Putin on his reelection. The two leaders reconfirmed their determination to advance the Japan-Russia relationship.

2. With regard to the issue of concluding a peace treaty, the two leaders held a discussion on initiatives for realizing joint economic activities on the Four Northern Islands, and on humanitarian measures for former island residents.

3. With regard to the issue of North Korea, the two leaders confirmed that amid moves to the upcoming inter-Korean summit meeting and U.S.-North Korea summit meeting, they will coordinate closely on achieving the denuclearization of North Korea.
