On July 8, commencing at 8:40 a.m. local time (July 8, 2:40 p.m Japan time) for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Ankara, Türkiye, to attend the NATO Summit and related meetings, held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Johann Wadephul, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany.

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI stated that, taking the opportunity of the NATO meeting, he wished to reaffirm the promotion of cooperation in various areas, including security and defense, with Germany, a premium partner with shared values and principles. He also stated that he would like to continue to work closely with Germany on the Updated “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” announced by Japan in May this year. In response, Foreign Minister Wadephul statedthat Germany intends to further strengthen its engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.
  2. The two ministers also exchanged views on the situations in the Middle East, including the importance of free and safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz without additional fees, the situations in Ukraine, and East Asia including their policies toward North Korea on the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue, and concurred that Japan and Germany will work closely together, including cooperation in the G7.
