Japan-Germany Relations

On February 24, commencing at 5:05 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone meeting with H.E. Mr. Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. The overview is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Chancellor Merz extended his congratulations to Prime Minister TAKAICHI on her reappointment, and stated that Germany attaches great importance to its partnership with Japan, a like-minded country in the Indo-Pacific region.
  2. In response, Prime Minister TAKAICHI expressed appreciation for Chancellor Merz’s congratulations and extended her congratulations to the Chancellor on his reelection as Chairman of the ruling party. She also stated that close coordination between Japan and Germany, as G7 members and premium partners, is increasingly important, and expressed her hope for Germany’s continued commitment to the Indo-Pacific region, given that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific is inseparable.
  3. The two leaders frankly exchanged views on the situations in East Asia and other regions and confirmed that Japan and Germany will work closely together to address the challenges facing the international community.
