On November 23, commencing at 11:50 local time (November 23, 18:50 JST) for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, who was visiting Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa, to attend the G20 Summit, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the beginning, Prime Minister Takaichi stressed the increasing importance of cooperation with Germany, whichplays a leading role in Europe as a member of the G7. She also stated that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific are inseparable, and that she hopes to work with Chancellor Merz to achieve a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific."
  2. Chancellor Merz offered his congratulations to Prime Minister Takaichi on her inauguration and stated that he would strengthen cooperation with Japan, as an important partner in Asia, in various fields.
  3. The two leaders concurred on strengthening cooperation in national and economic security between Japan and Germany.
  4. They also exchanged views on international situation, including the Indo-Pacific, and concurred that Japan and Germany will work closely together to address the challenges facing the international community.
