Japan-UK Foreign Ministers’ meeting

On November 11, commencing at 5:45 p.m. in local time (7:45 a.m. on November 12, Japan time) for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Canada to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, held a Foreign Ministers’ meeting with the Rt Hon Yvette COOPER, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The overview is as follows:
- At the outset, Minister MOTEGI expressed his pleasure at meeting Secretary Cooper for the first time. Minister MOTEGI also stated that as G7 partners and both key allies of the United States, he would like to further develop Japan-UK cooperation and work together to address various challenges facing the international community. Secretary Cooper replied by congratulating Minister MOTEGI on his appointment and stated that she would like to collaborate with Minister MOTEGI to further strengthen the Japan-UK relations.
- The two Ministers, referring to the visit of the UK’s Carrier Strike Group 25 to Japan this summer and the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), concurred to continue advancing concrete Japan–UK security cooperation. The two Ministers also concurred on working closely together as like-minded partners in the field of economic security.
- The two Ministers exchanged views and concurred to continue to work closely together on various issues in the international community, such as the situations in the Indo-Pacific, such as their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues and the abductions issue, and the situation in Ukraine.
