On November 12, commencing at 0:00 p.m. local time (2:00 a.m. on November 13, Japan time) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Canada to attend G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, held a Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with H.E. Mr. Jean-Noël BARROT, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset, Minister MOTEGI expressed Japan’s desire to closely cooperate with France, an "Exceptional Partner" which shares values and principles and is also an Indo-Pacific nation, to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific and to maintain and strengthen the free and open international order based on the rule of law. In response, Minister Barrot expressed his congratulations on Minister MOTEGI's appointment as Foreign Minister and stated that he would like to further strengthen the collaboration between Japan and France, which share values and principles.
  2. The two Ministers concurred to advance security cooperation between Japan and France and to further promote efforts in the field of economic security.
  3. The two Ministers confirmed that Japan and France will work closely together on various issues facing the international community, including the situation in Ukraine and in East Asia, such as their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue.
  4. The two Ministers also concurred to continue to closely cooperate within the framework of the G7, which France will assume the presidency next year.
