Japan-EU Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On February 15, commencing at 12:55 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes (local time; 8:55 p.m. Japan time), Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Ms. Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
- At the outset, Minister Iwaya welcomed the first face-to-face meeting with High Representative Kallas and expressed his desire to work with her in a wide range of areas, including security to take Japan-EU relations to new heights.
- Both sides exchanged views on regional and international affairs, including Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the situation in East Asia, including North Korea, reaffirming their shared understanding that the security of Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific is inseparable. Both sides shared the further importance of cooperation among like-minded countries including Japan and the EU, and that Japan will continue to work closely with the EU, which shares common values including the rule of law.
