Japan-EU Relations

  1. On February 26, the third meeting of the Joint Committee under the Japan-EU Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA), co-chaired by Mr. UYAMA Hideki, Director-General of the European Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Gunnar Wiegand, Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific, European External Action Service, was held virtually.
  2. Japan and the EU discussed bilateral cooperation including COVID-19 and Indo-Pacific and took stock and discussed the future issues and the implementation of the Japan-EU SPA, including a focus on cooperation based on “the Partnership on Sustainable Connectivity and Quality Infrastructure between Japan and the EU”. Japan and the EU shared the view to continue enhancing cooperation in such fields as multilateralism, sustainable connectivity, quality infrastructure and global issues including climate change and other environmental issues as well as security policy in accordance with SPA.
