Foreign Minister Iwaya’s Visit to Samarkand

On August 26, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and his spouse visited Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The overview is as follows.
- Lunch Meeting with Mr. Bobur USMANOV, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan etc.
Minister Iwaya held a lunch meeting with Mr. Bobur USMANOV, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Mr. Rustam KOBILOV, Deputy Governor of Samarkand Region.They exchanged views on cooperation for facilitation of regional exchange between Samarkand and Japan in such fields as economy, culture and tourism. - Flower Offering at the Mausoleum of Islam Karimov
Minister Iwaya offerd flowers at the Mausoleum of Islam Karimov and expressed his respect for the late Mr. Karimov, who served as the first Pesident of Uzbekistan and contributed greatly to the development of relations between Japan and Uzbekistan, including through his three visits to Japan. - In addition Minister Iwaya visited Samarkand Automobile Factory, where Japanese companies(ISUZU MOTORS LIMITED and ITOCHU Corporation) have invested and Japanese-brand automobiles are manufactured, and the apple orchard supported by JICA Partnership Program “Improvement of apple cultivation technology and dissemination to the farmers”.

Through the above-mentioned program, Japanese apple cultivation techniques were introduced to Uzbekistan, improving work efficiency, harvest volume and quality, which led to improved livelihoods for vulnerable farmers.
