Japan-Turkmenistan Summit Meeting and Working Lunch



On April 15, commencing at 0:45 p.m. for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Mr. Serdar BERDIMUHAMEDOV, President of Turkmenistan, who was paying a visit to Japan as an official Guest of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. At the beginning of the meeting, the two leaders presented Joint Press Release (PDF) .
From 1:30 p.m. following the summit meeting for approximately 60 minutes, Prime Minister ISHIBA hosted a working lunch joined by President Berdimuhamedov.
An overview of the events is as follows,
1. Introduction
- Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed President Berdimuhamedov’s visit to Japan and welcomed that on April 14 Turkmenistan held the first National Day Event of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan. He also stated that he would like to closely work together to deepen relations with Turkmenistan as mutually beneficial partner based on friendship and mutual trust.
- In response, President Berdimuhamedov expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received during his visit to Japan and his desire to further strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
2. Bilateral Relations
- Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed that the bilateral relations between Japan and Turkmenistan made a progress in various fields including “Central Asia plus Japan” Dialogue and stated that Japan would like to further strengthen economic relations taking advantage of its technology in order to realize energy transition of Turkmenistan with its rich natural resources through the promotion of projects such as the second GTG(Gas to Gasoline) plant and ammonia and urea plant in Kiyanly.
- In response, President Berdimuhamedov said that he would like to strengthen cooperation in all areas, such as political, economic and cultural relations.
3. Cooperation in the international arena
The two leaders affirmed the importance of international law and the principles of the UN Charter and confirmed that they will work closely together in the international arena, including the UN reform.
4. Regional Situation
The two leaders exchanged views on the international situation including Ukraine, Central Asia and the Middle East.
