Japan-Tajikistan Foreign Ministers' Meeting

On May 1, commencing at 3:20 p.m. (local time) for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. Fumio Kishida, Minister for Foreign Affairs, held a foreign ministers’ meeting with H.E. Mr. Sirodjidin Aslov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan during his visit to Turkemenistan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
1. Beginning
Foreign Minister Kishida expressed his pleasure at being able to meet Foreign Minister Aslov again in this milestone year, the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Tajikistan, and explained that he hopes to collaborate closely on advancing the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of the “Central Asia plus Japan” Dialogue with Tajikistan, which is the next chair.
2. Bilateral relations
Foreign Minister Kishida explained that the Japan-Tajikistan Intergovernmental Committee was successfully held recently as a follow-up to the visit by Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, in 2015, and that he hopes this will be an opportunity for bilateral cooperation to progress in the fields of the economy, technology and science.
Foreign Minister Kishida stated that in response to the request from Tajikistan, Japan is prepared to explore holding a preparatory meeting on a bilateral investment treaty, and that he hopes to hold the meeting promptly in order to develop bilateral economic relations. In response, Foreign Minister Aslov said that he intends to continue developing the bilateral relationship by taking advantage of the opportunity to be the next chair of the “Central Asia plus Japan” Dialogue.
