Japan-Kyrgyz Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
On May 18, commencing at 4:50 p.m. (local time; same day, 8:50 p.m. JST) for approximately 40 minutes, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Chingiz AIDARBEKOV, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic during his visit to Tajikistan. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

1. Opening Remarks

(1) Minister Kono stated that Japan places importance on its relations with the Kyrgyz Republic, which shares with Japan fundamental values including democracy. He expressed his willingness to continually work with Minister Aidarbekov for further development of bilateral relations and his hope that this Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of the “Central Asia plus Japan” Dialogue would bring closer bilateral relations and more active regional cooperation in Central Asia.

(2) Minister Aidarbekov stated that since Prime Minister Abe’s visit to the Kyrgyz Republic in 2015, the bilateral relations of the two countries had been continuously strengthened and that he would collaborate with Japan to keep this momentum, as a former Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic to Japan.

2. Bilateral Relations

(1) Minister Kono stated that he welcomes the increase in bilateral exchange in recent years. He asked for support of Minister Aidarbekov toward an early conclusion of the bilateral investment treaty to further enhance relations.

(2) Minister Aidarbekov referred to the projects being implemented by JICA in Issyk-Kul Region to add value to products, including honey and felt products and expressed his gratitude for Japan’s cooperation, as well as his hope for further development in the fields of economy and tourism, including business activities. 

3. Others

The two ministers exchanged views regarding the North Korea situation, etc. and shared the view that they would work closely on the issues.
