Courtesy Call on President Zelenskyy of Ukraine by Foreign Minister Iwaya

On November 16, commencing at 1:45 p.m. local time (8:45 p.m. Japan time) for approximately 50 minutes, H.E. Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting Ukraine, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine. The summary of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset , President Zelenskyy welcomed Minister Iwaya's visit and expressed gratitude for Japan’s contributions and support to date. Minister Iwaya, in response, expressed his sincere respect for President Zelenskyy's leadership and the courage and perseverance of the Ukrainian people in standing against Russia’s aggression. He reiterated Japan’s unwavering stance that "Japan stands with Ukraine" and explained that his visit to Ukraine was part of his first overseas visit since assuming office.
- Minister Iwaya referred to Japan's efforts under the "Peace Formula" since the first Summit on Peace held in June this year. In response, President Zelenskyy provided an explanation of the "Peace Formula" and the "Victory Plan" that he is promoting. Minister Iwaya expressed his gratitude for the explanation and conveyed Japan's support for the early realization of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine as soon as possible, as stated in "Victory Plan," and that Japan will continue its cooperation. Both parties then concurred on continuing to work together.
- Minister Iwaya expressed serious concern about the deployment of North Korea’s troops to Russia. President Zelenskyy shared the same recognition, and both confirmed the importance of strengthening information sharing and collaboration between the two countries on this matter. The two sides also exchanged views on collaboration and cooperation in the security field, and agreed to enhance their collaboration.
- In addition, Minister Iwaya explained Japan's continued support to help Ukraine cope with the severe energy situation during the harsh winter season, as well as support for mine action measures. President Zelenskyy expressed deep gratitude for various forms of support provided by Japan and also expressed his expectations for continued humanitarian assistance.
