 On Thursday, July 17, commencing at 3:30 p.m. for approximately 30 minutes, Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Fumio Kishida, who was visiting Ukraine, made a courtesy call on H. E. Mr. Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Prime Minister of Ukraine. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
  1. Minister Kishida expressed respect for Prime Minister Yatsenyuk, who has been leading domestic reforms during the most difficult period in Ukraine’s history since the change in government in February this year, and said that the Government of Japan intends to actively support Ukraine’s political and economic reforms. Additionally, Minister Kishida said that since the Ukrainian crisis emerged Japan has consistently emphasized respect for the rule of law and for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and changing the status quo by force, including the annexation of Crimea, is completely unacceptable. In response, Prime Minister Yatsenyuk expressed deep gratitude for Japan’s proactive contribution.
  2. Minister Kishida said that the Government of Japan considers the following three points important: 1) improving the economic situation; 2) restoring democracy; and 3) promoting domestic dialogue and unification, and he explained specific support measures by Japan. In response, Prime Minister Yatsenyuk expressed gratitude for Japan’s proactive support for Ukraine’s peace and stability, along with expressing a sense of expectation regarding investment in Ukraine by Japanese companies. Prime Minister Yatsenyuk also explained the domestic reforms and measures, currently being pursued by him, to calm the crisis, and the situation etc. in Eastern Ukraine.
