On October 21, commencing at 11:15 a.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with H.E. Ms. Zuzana ČAPUTOVÁ,President of the Slovak Republic. The overview of the meeting is as follows. The meeting was also attended by Mr. NISHIMURA Akihiro, Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary, Mr. KITAMURA Shigeru, Secretary-General of the National Security Secretariat, Mr. HASEGAWA Eiichi, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister, Mr. IMAI Takaya, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister and others from the Japanese side, and H.E. Mr. Marián TOMÁŠIK, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic to Japan, Mr. Peter BÁTOR, Advisor to the President on Foreign Policy, Security and Defense, and Mr. Juraj RIZMAN, Advisor to the President on Environment and Civic Society from the Slovak side.
1. Opening Remarks
Prime Minister Abe congratulated President Čaputová on her appointment as President of the Slovak Republic and welcomed her visit to Japan to attend the Ceremony of Enthronement of His Majesty the Emperor. He noted that he had made the first-ever visit by a Japanese prime minister to Slovakia in April this year, and expressed appreciation for the warm welcome he received at that time. Prime Minister Abe expressed his gratitude to President Čaputová for the condolence message for the victims of typhoon Hagibis addressed to His Majesty the Emperor.
2. Bilateral Relations
Prime Minister Abe stated, “Slovakia is a partner that shares the same fundamental values as Japan and we place importance on cooperation with Slovakia as a country that is active in multilateral forums, including chairing the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD),” and “We also share good economic relations and I hope that the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) mission that is currently visiting Slovakia will help to further broaden the scope of cooperation.” He also stated, “I hope that we can take bilateral relations to a new level as we look forward to the 100th anniversary of Japan-Slovakia exchanges in 2020.” In response, President Čaputová congratulated His Majesty the Emperor on the accessions to the throne and the beginning of new Reiwa era. She noted that the bilateral relationship is constructive and has large potential, and also mentioned that Japan is one of the biggest investors to the Slovak Republic in Asia. She also proposed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of green technologies, innovation and addressing the aging society.”
President Čaputová also stated that the climate change and environmental problems are priority issues in the term and explained the situation in Slovak Republic. Both leaders exchanged their views on climate change.
Both leaders agreed to engage in cooperation towards the 100th anniversary of Japan-Slovakia exchanges in 2020.

3. International Situation
Prime Minister Abe asked for understanding and supporting towards the early resolution of the abduction issue and received support from President Čaputová.
