Japan-Germany Summit Meeting
June 5, 2014


On June 5, commencing at 11:00 a.m. for approximately 10 minutes, Mr. Shinzo Abe, the Prime Minister of Japan, who is on his visit to Brussels to attend the G7 Summit, held a summit meeting with H.E. Dr. Angela Merkel, Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. An overview of the meeting is as follows:
1. Opening Remarks
At the beginning, Prime Minister Abe stated that he was pleased to meet her again since the last meeting in April, and expressed his gratitude for the kind welcome he had received in Berlin.
2. Situation in Ukraine
Concerning the situation in Ukraine, Prime Minister Abe expressed his gratitude to Chancellor Merkel for her leadership during the meeting in the evening on the 4th, and stated that the Government of Japan had been providing assistance for the stabilization of Ukraine, and would be ready to join the discussion on Ukraine and make active contributions. Moreover, the two leaders shared their views that the views of the two countries concerning the situation in Ukraine are close, and therefore they would coordinate with each other on this issue as the chair of the G8 in 2015 and 2016.
