Japan-Czech Republic Relations
Meeting between Prime Minister ISHIBA and President PAVEL of the Czech Republic

On July 25, commencing at around 2:00 p.m. Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Petr PAVEL, President of the Czech Republic, who is visiting Japan to participate in the National Day Event of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, for approximately 40 minutes. The overview is as follows.
- At the outset, Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed President Pavel’s visit to Japan, expressed his expectation for the promotion of exchanges through the entry into force of the Agreement between Japan and the Czech Republic for Air Services, which is scheduled to enter into force in October this year. Prime Minister Ishiba also stated that Japan wishes to work closely with the Czech Republic, an important partner which shares values and principles, both bilaterally and in the international arena, based on the shared recognition that the security in Europe and that in the Indo-Pacific are inseparable.
- Furthermore, Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his expectation for the promotion of multifaceted cooperative relations based on the memorandum between the relevant ministries of both countries on trade and investment cooperation and defense industry cooperation, as well as the deepening of regional and people-to-people exchanges through the cooperation memorandum between Himeji Castle and Prague Castle.
- In response, President Pavel stated that both countries share fundamental values such as democracy and the rule of law. And President Pavel also stated that he is accompanied by the business representatives from the IT and Defense Industry on this visit, and expressed his expectation for the promotion of bilateral relations especially in the economic field. Both leaders shared the view that they will further strengthen bilateral relations, taking the opportunity of the Expo.
- The two leaders also exchanged views on regional situations in Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific, such as dealing with North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues as well as the abduction issue, and concurred to coordinate closely.
