On May 21, commencing at 4:05 p.m., Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Alexander Van der Bellen, Federal President of the Republic of Austria, who is visiting Japan to participate in the National Day Event of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, for approximately 20 minutes. The overview of the meeting is as follows.

  1. At the outset, Prime Minister Ishiba welcomed President Van der Bellen’s visit to Japan. Prime Minister Ishiba also mentioned Expo 1873 Vienna, the first Expo in which the Meiji Government officially participated, and expressed his hope for further strengthening the bilateral cooperation in the fields of business, science and technology through the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. Furthermore, he expressed his intention, amid the increasingly severe international situation, to strengthen coordination with Austria, with which Japan shares values and principles, both bilaterally and in the international arena.
  2. In response, President Van der Bellen, accompanied by his Minister of Economy, stated that he wished to strengthen economic relations through the Expo. Both sides concurred to further develop bilateral relations.
  3. Furthermore, they discussed a wide range of economic issues in detail, taking into account the impact of US tariff measures on global economy and the multilateral trade system.
  4. Prime Minister Ishiba and President Van der Bellen also exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine and East Asian affairs, and concurred to continue to coordinate closely in the international arena.
