G7 Kananaskis Summit
Overview of Session 5 “A strong and sovereign Ukraine”

On June 17, commencing at 10:20 a.m. (local time. 1:20 a.m. on June 18, Japan time.) for approximately 60 minutes, Mr. ISHBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, attended the G7 Kananaskis Summit Session 5 “A strong and sovereign Ukraine”. The overview is as follows.
- Prime Minister Ishiba stated his respect for President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people for their bravery in standing up against the Russia’s aggression day after day, and pointed out the need to prompt swift, positive and concrete actions from Russia to achieve an early comprehensive ceasefire and the realiztion a just and lasting peace, and the importance of continued G7 unity and coordination. Prime Minister Ishiba explained the impact of Russia’s invasion over the Indo-Pacific, on which many countries agreed.
- Regarding support for Ukraine, Prime Minister Ishiba introduced a ministerial-level conference on mine action to be held in Tokyo on October 22 this year, and stated that Japan would further promote public-private partnership assistance for recovery and reconstruction, including industrial development in Ukraine.
- Prime Minister Ishiba also stated that Japan would continue to strengthen cooperation with like-minded countries, including NATO members, regarding the situation in Ukraine.
- Prime Minister Ishiba expressed a deep concern over the advancement of the cooperation between North Korea and Russia and stated that North Korea’s gaining cooperation from Russia would jeopanize the global security. In addition, Prime Minister Ishiba expressed his concern over cryptocurrency theft, which is suspected to be one of the funding sources for North Korea’s nuclear and missile development. He asked anew for continued understanding and cooperation for the immediate resolution of the abductions issue.
