APEC Ministerial Meeting 2024 Session II
November 14, 2024
On November 14 (November 15 JST), Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, together with Mr. MUTO Yoji, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, participated in the APEC Ministerial Meeting held in Lima, Republic of Peru. The Session II of the meeting was chaired by H.E. Mr. Elmer José Germán Gonzalo SCHIALER SALCEDO, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Peru, under the theme of “Sustainable Growth for Resilient Development.”
- In the meeting, Minister IWAYA stated as follows;
- Strengthening food security is one of Japan’s priorities, and even under the influence of factors such as increased food demand, climate change and natural disasters, sufficient, safe and nutritious food must be available to all people, at all times.
- Regarding the reduction of food loss, as part of its efforts to promote the SDGs, Japan successfully reduced food loss levels by half compared to 2000 in 2022, eight years ahead of its 2030 target, by conducting a variety of measures including reviewing business practices, enhancing efforts to reduce food loss throughout supply chains, and raising awareness of consumers. Japan is willing to share its best practices with APEC economies and will make further contributions to promoting a circular food economy at the national and regional levels.
- As a regional situation that has significant impact on international supply chains, Japan is deeply concerned over Russia's ongoing aggression against Ukraine, which is a clear challenge to the international order based on the rule of law. It is necessary to realize just and lasting peace in Ukraine at the soonest possible time. Japan also emphasizes its deep concern about the rising tensions and humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. Japan strongly insists that all concerned parties exert maximum restraint and comply with international law, in particular international humanitarian law.
- Many of the participating ministers stated that the development of a resilient society requires the establishment of stable and efficient systems in the fields of energy and food security, and confirmed their continuous cooperation toward the realization of a sustainable and inclusive APEC.
