Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)

On October 31, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Dialogue with the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) was held in Gyeongju, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, attended the meeting. The summary is as follows.

As the ABAC-Japan members, Dr. SUZUKI Jun, Senior Advisor, Teijin Limited; Mr. IKEDA Junichiro, Director, Chairman of the Board, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd.; Mr. FURUSAWA Mitsuhiro, President of Institute for Global Financial Affairs, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, also attended the meeting.

  1. At the outset, H.E. Mr. LEE Jae Myung, President of the ROK and this year’s APEC Chair, delivered his opening remarks and Mr. LEE Kyu-ho, ABAC Chair for 2025, made a presentation on “2025 ABAC Key Recommendations to APEC Leaders.”
  2. Foreign Minister MOTEGI then participated in discussions with the ABAC members from various economies, including Dr. SUZUKI, and engaged in a frank exchange of views on a wide range of topics such as regional economic integration, AI and digital innovation, bio and healthcare, energy transition, and climate change measures.
  3. During the exchange, Minister MOTEGI emphasized the importance of maintaining and strengthening a free and fair international economic order, WTO reform, and deepening and expanding high-quality economic partnerships. He also pointed out that for challenges such as AI and climate change, it is crucial to establish rules suited to the new era and based on diverse approaches, through public-private partnerships.
