Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Technology

On June 26, commencing at 11:30 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call from H.E. Dr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), during his visit to Japan.
- At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that she would like to confirm the enhancement of the cooperation between Japan and the IAEA on issues related to nuclear non-proliferation and the promotion of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
- Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated the importance of the IAEA’s role regarding Iran’s nuclear issue, including verification activities and expressed that Japan would like to closely cooperate with the IAEA toward a peaceful resolution of this issue.
- Furthermore, Prime Minister TAKAICHI expressed gratitude for the IAEA’s cooperation in Japan’s efforts toward the decommissioning of the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station including the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea and the reconstruction of Fukushima, such as the managed recycling and final disposal of removed soil.
- In response, Director General Grossi stated that a peaceful resolution of the Iran’s nuclear issue is important, and that the IAEA would like to contribute actively toward its resolution while coordinating closely with Japan.
- The two sides exchanged views on issues such as North Korea’s nuclear issue and cooperation with the IAEA toward early social implementation of next-generation innovative reactors and fusion energy, and concurred to continuing close cooperation on these matters.
