On August 25, 2015 in Sydney, the Government of Japan and the Government of Australia held the 15th Japan-Australia Joint Science and Technology Committee (JSTC) meeting.

The JSTC meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Makoto Katsura, Ambassador for Science and Technology Cooperation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Ms. Jane Urquhart, Acting Head of Science and Commercialisation Policy Division, Department of Industry, Innovation and Science of Australia. The meeting brought together representatives from a wide range of government agencies, major research institutions, and academies.

The JSTC noted that the Japan-Australia partnership has grown significantly over recent years, particularly in light of the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement and the ''Special Strategic Partnership'' for the 21st Century, signed in 2014.

The JSTC provided an update on science, technology and innovation policy development, including new initiatives in the area of open science, and exchanged views about the current framework to facilitate cooperation. The JSTC noted recent activities and the progress with collaboration in the fields of nuclear and physical sciences, Antarctic research, space science, marine science and medical research.

Japan and Australia noted a shared focus on achieving economic development, industry competitiveness, and innovative businesses through the strategic use of science and technology.

The JSTC reaffirmed the importance that each country places on the close partnership.
Through this constructive discussion, the JSTC committed to continuing to enhance Japanese-Australian science and technology collaboration, including cooperation between the research community and industry sector. The co-chairs reaffirmed that the cooperation in science and technology between both countries had been steadily advancing and expressed their hope for further development of cooperation between the two countries for deepening the bilateral relations.

The JSTC agreed to hold their next joint meeting in Japan and the specific date of the meeting to be coordinated through diplomatic channels.
