THE VISIT OF THE OPCW EXECUTIVE COUNCIL DELEGATION TO THE ABANDONED CHEMICAL WEAPONS DESTRUCTION SITES

From August 31 to September 5, the Government of Japan, together with the Government of the People’s Republic of China, hosted a visit by the Delegation representing the Executive Council (EC) of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to sites related to the Abandoned Chemical Weapons (ACW) destruction project.
- Delegates from 13 countries, including the Chairperson of the EC, and H.E. Ms. Sabrina DALLAFIOR, Director-General of the OPCW, participated in the visit to observe the ACW destruction project sites in Jilin province, China. The Japanese side was represented by Mr. IGUSA Makoto, Deputy Director General of Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Chinese side was represented by Mr. WANG Daxue, Deputy Director General, Department of Arms Control, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- During the visit, the participants visited the ACW excavation and recovery sites and the destruction facilities. They were briefed on efforts to ensure the safe and steady excavation, recovery, and destruction of ACW.
- Japan, through a whole-of-government effort, will continue working with China and the OPCW to complete the ACW destruction projects as soon as possible.
