Japan and the United Nations

1. On April 24th, Mr. Taro Kono, Minister for Foreign Affairs, received a courtesy call by Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, at the margin of the Second Session of the Preparatory Committee of the 2020 NPT Review Conference.

2. First, Minister Kono emphasized that this session is an important meeting in increasing momentum towards the 2020 NPT Review Conference and that Japan would provide inputs of the recommendations submitted by the “Group of Eminent Persons for Substantive Advancement of Nuclear Disarmament.” Minister Kono also mentioned that Japan would like to strengthen its cooperation with the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs to increase momentam towards the 2020 NPT Review Conference.

3. Both sides shared views on various issues in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation and agreed on continuos cooperation between Japan and the United Nations.
