August 29, 2014

2015 marks 70 years since the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is also in 2015 that the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Review Conference will be held. In order to build international momentum for "a world free of nuclear weapons" in the run up to this important year, Foreign Minister contributed an article to Foreign Affairs, one of the most authoritative magazines dealing with foreign policy and international affairs. That contribution was published in the magazine's online edition on August 28, 2014.

That article is based on the speech that Foreign Minister gave in Nagasaki in January 2014 on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation policies in 2014 as well as on the outcome of the NPDI (Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative) Ministerial Meeting that was held in Hiroshima last April. Foreign Minister proposed four specific steps based on a multilateral approach, ahead of the NPT Review Conference that is held every five years and that will be held in 2015.
