- The 29th Annual Conference of the UK-Japan 21st Century Group will be held in Tokyo, from Tuesday, May 24 to Saturday, 26.
- The Conference will be attended by about 30 members of the Japanese side and about 20 members of the UK and will be co-chaired by Mr. Maehara, Member of the House of Representatives and Lord Howard of Lympne, Member of the House of Lords.
- In this Conference, discussions will take place on themes such as (1) Latest Developments both in Japan and the UK with an emphasis on respective domestic political situation and economic prospects, (2) Nuclear/Energy Issues and Opportunities for UK-Japan Cooperation, (3) Changing Security and Economic Environment in East Asia with an emphasis on the rise of China, “pivot” by the US and Japanese strategic response, (4) Fiscal and Financial Challenges and the Global Economy with an emphasis on the financial crisis in Europe and the future of the EU, (5) International Development Cooperation, Prospect for UK-Japan Cooperation, and (6) Prospect for UK-Japan Defence Collaboration.
- On Wednesday, May 23, UK members of the Group will pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and a reception will be hosted by Mr. Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs.
