March 12, 2012
- On July 3 and 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan will jointly host a High-Level International Conference on Large-Scale Natural Disasters in the three disaster-stricken prefectures in the Tohoku region with related domestic and international organizations.
- This conference aims at contributing to building resilient societies through sharing experiences and lessons learned from the recent large scale disasters in the world including the Great East Japan Earthquake and through discussing issues related to disaster risk reduction from various aspects including preparedness, emergency response and new challenges such as urbanization. Japan envisages to capitalize on the outcomes of this conference to the process towards the third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in 2015, which Japan expressed its intention to host, and to a new framework on disaster risk reduction (post Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015).
- The plenary meeting will be held in Sendai City, and the breakout sessions will be held in Ichinoseki City, Ishinomaki City and Fukushima City. This conference is expected to enhance awareness on and increase priority of disaster risk reduction in the international society. This is a way for Japan to express out deep gratefulness for the warm assistance extended by the international community at the occasion of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The conference will also provide an opportunity for a number of stakeholders to visit disaster-stricken areas which continue their endeavours toward reconstruction.
