Symposium on the Convention on the Rights of the Child “Challenges for the Rights of Children”

  1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan will hold a symposium on the Convention on the Rights of the Child entitled “Challenges for the Rights of Children,” co-organized by UNICEF Tokyo Office and Japan Committee for UNICEF, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 13:30 on March 26, 2010 (Fri).

This symposium is aimed at promoting the rights of the child stipulated in this Convention through interactive discussions among experts and stakeholders in Japan and from abroad.  Ms. Chinami Nishimura, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan will deliver the opening remarks. This symposium will be also attended by two invitees from overseas, Ms. Dee Brillenburg Wurth, Child Protection Advisor of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), and Ms. Amihan Abueva, Regional Coordinator of the Asia Against Child Trafficking (Asia ACTs).

  3. This symposium will be composed of three sessions: (1) “Respect and Promotion of the Rights of the Child,” (2) “Protection from the Sexual Exploitation of Children,” and (3) “Children and Armed Conflict.” With the aim of promoting “Respect and Promotion of the Rights of the Child” in line with the basic philosophy of the Convention which celebrated the 20th anniversary of adoption at the United Nations last November and its two Optional Protocols, discussions will focus on problems which Japan should tackle in this area as well as roles it should play in terms of international cooperation, based on practical recommendations raised by experts and stakeholders and Q & A sessions with the audience .
