- On October 26 (Tue), Aich-Nagoya Ministerial Meeting of the REDD+ Partnership will take place at the Nagoya Congress Center in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. Mr. Seiji Maehara, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan and The Hon. Samuel Tei Abal, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Immigration of Papua New Guinea will co-chair the meeting in which major developed countries, countries with tropical rainforests, relevant international organizations, NGOs, groups of indigenous people, and other stakeholders will participate.
- This meeting will be held under the framework of the REDD+ Partnership, which was established in order to take immediate actions to address efforts on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD+), one of the important measures to tackle against climate change. At the meeting, the achievements under the Partnership including establishment of a database for REDD+ and the analysis of the present REDD+ efforts will be reviewed, and a direction for future activities will be discussed.
- Japan, along with Papua New Guinea, is co-chairing the Partnership this year and is playing a leading role in advancing REDD+ activities. It is expected that the outcome of this meeting will lead to advancing international negotiations at the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change which will take place at the end of November.
