- The Second Meeting of the Japan-China Policy Dialogue on the Mekong
Region was convened at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on June 11 (Thu).
Attendees included Mr. Kazuhide Ishikawa, Deputy Director-General of the
Southeast and Southwest Asian Affairs Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
and other officials concerned from the Japanese side; and Mr. Lu Kang, Counselor
of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences, Ministry
of Foreign Affairs, and other officials concerned from the Chinese side.
- At the conference, Japan announced its decision to hold the Japan-Mekong
Region Summit this year, and China explained that it has placed great emphasis
on cooperation within the framework of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).
Exchanges of opinions were then held on cooperation of each side towards
international frameworks regarding the Mekong Region, and direction of future
cooperation in the Mekong Region to build reciprocal relations among Japan,
China and the Mekong Region. Both sides also agreed to intensify discussions
regarding the cooperation in the region.
- Both sides agreed to convene the Third Meeting in China, and to decide upon the specific location and date through diplomatic channels.

The First Meeting of the Japan-China
Policy Dialogue on the Mekong Region was convened in Beijing on April 25, 2008.
At the conference, the participants exchanged views on the current situation
of the Mekong Region and shared information on their respective policies toward
the region. The two governments shared the view that reciprocal relations among
Japan, China and the Mekong region should be built in order to promote development
and stability of the region.
