Symposium on Agroforestry: Its Relevance and Potential in Promoting Local and Global Sustainable Development
November 17, 2009
Japanese
The Symposium on Agroforestry will be held on Wednesday, December 16th, from 13:00 to 18:00 at U Thant International Conference Hall in the United Nations University Headquarters (5-53-70 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is a co-organizer of the symposium.
Through the promotion of diverse agriculture and social forestry, agroforestry has been building international prominence as an effective measure not only for rural development and poverty reduction at the local level, but also for global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity and desertification. Agroforestry is also in line with the Satoyama Initiative, led by the Government of Japan and the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS), through advocating for a society based on the symbiotic relationship between human and nature.
This Symposium will address wide-ranging topics of agroforestry, covering both theoretical and practical issues including its relationship with the Satoyama approach, with the participation of Dr. Dennis Garrity, Director-General of the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF), a world renowned research institution in this field, as well as advocates of the Brazilian Amazon and Indonesia agroforestries. The Symposium aims to explore the current situation and significance of agroforestry and to identify its potential for the future, taking account of the 15th Conference of Parties (COP 15) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in December of this year in Copenhagen and the 10th Conference of Parties (COP 10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity in October 2010 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture.
The Symposium is open to the public and welcomes participation of a broad range of people including researchers, students, officials and practitioners who are interested in, or working on, satoyama, climate change and other environmental issues, as well as development and international co-operation.
