Expert Committee for the Fifth Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM5)

  1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will host the kick-off meeting of the Expert Committee for the PALM5 at the Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka in Tokyo on November 25 (Tue).
     
  2. This Committee is formed to prepare for the Fifth Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting or PALM5 which the Government of Japan will host in Tomamu, Hokkaido, in May 2009.  The Committee consists of six core members including intellectuals to; 1) review the implementation and achievements of previous PALMs, and 2) based on the outcomes of the review, consider how the future modality of the assistance of the Government of Japan should be towards the Pacific Islands.
     
  3. The Committee will have a total of six meetings up to March 2009 to discuss various issues regarding the situations in the Pacific Islands such as climate change.  Policy proposals will be made at the wrap-up meeting, and will be discussed further at the SOM Meeting (Senior Officials Meeting) of PALM5 in Japan at the end of March 2009.
